1. Introduction
"A man is the product of his thoughts" (Philosophy). This quote can be applied to
several fields. But in this case we are talking about the area of academic fields.
Those people who have devoted their whole life to study a certain subject can
often quote them in their work.
"Man is the measure of all things" (Socrates) is another famous quote that
guides us in life. We are, by nature, bound to study certain areas and measure
everything by them. So a physicist might be an astronomer, chemist and so on.
However if one is an engineer then one should have a clear understanding of the
science, mathematics, theorems, theories and so on. This book is meant to
introduce the reader to the basics of robotics. You would learn about the
theories, definitions and so on of robotics. Thence it will be easy to find the
applications of robotics in the everyday world. The book is easy to read and the
chapters will give you a detailed idea of the field.
Key terms and other things that are needed to know before embarking on
the study of robotics are also introduced in the book. So that the reader can
appreciate the contents with better understanding and approach.
Many teachers and universities in India have started doing the subject of
robotics in their own way. One particular example is that, last year during the
time of this book was being written, H.H.Mr. Bimal Marandi of IIT Kharagpur
started his own program on Robotics in his department. To the best of my
knowledge, this was the first time, that this subject was being taught.

2. History
The term "Robot" was initially coined by Karel Capek in 1920. His idea was
to represent human beings as mechanical beings. He had then gone on to invent
several characters like "R.A.R.O." in his short story, "RUR" in 1921.
Soon after, in 1935, Dr. Hanau (German, Dutch and Japanese), had developed
the first robotic head, after experimenting for long on prosthetic device that
would be used to help the amputees. In the same year, in Germany, he had
invented the wireless telecommunication device. This particular device was
used to help the German army to communicate with the 01e38acffe
